Hafith Al Haaj Mohammed Hashiem Datay

27 February 1991 to 5 January 2020

All thanks and praise is due to All Mighty Allah and our choicest blessings on our beloved messenger and Prophet Muhammed Mustapha SAW.

Almighty Allah JJ blessed us with four very good and disciplined children, Alhamdu Lillah, and on the 5th January 2020, one, namely Hafith Mohammed Hashiem was recalled by Allah JJ.

We are eternally grateful to the Almighty for granting us such a noble and model child in the form of Mohammed Hashiem. We consider our children to be special gifts and amana (loans) from the Almighty and we acknowledge the fact that they will be with us for as long as Almighty Allah allows us to have them and we treasure their presence in our lives Alhamdu Lillah.

As parents we have special and fond memories of Mohammed Hashiem and indeed he was sent to us as a miracle as his life was a struggle from birth for different reasons. He lived through life with amazing life skills despite his challenges and then returned to our creator peacefully, making us wonder whether we actually took good enough care of him.

Hafith Mohammed Hashiem loved reciting the Qur’an and he certainly was a great influence for us all at home to start reciting and loving the Qur’an. Our home feels empty without him and his dedication in reading the Qur’an daily. He had great respect for his various Ustaads / teachers and managed to establish good relations with all of them. He valued their (teachers) dedication and responsibilities for  teaching the Kalaam of Allah JJ and their sacrifice to enable the students to achieve their heart’s desires Shukr Alhamdu Lillah.

As parents we humbly pray and beg Almighty Allah to forgive all his major and minor sins, place noor in his qabr and grant him the highest abode in Jannatul Firdose In Shaa Allah AMEEN.

We also pray that the All Mighty Allah bless his family, friends, school, principal, teachers and colleagues and reward all those involved in his development abundantly.

Kindly find below a few points raised by his siblings:

Our dear and beloved brother, Mohammed Hashiem Datay, was a soft-spoken, kind hearted and compassionate person whose love and affection for the Quraan and Sunnah remained resolute until the end.

Mohammed Hashiem’s character speaks for himself. He was not just a living example of kindness and humanity, but his life became an impeccable example for us all that we learn lessons from every memory of him. He had a unique personality that drew everyone and anyone close to him, old and young. He had a genuine love, care and respect for everyone he met in his life. His charming smile and contagious laugh filled our life with joy.

Mohammed Hashiem is known as our special brother. He entered the world as a miracle and left the world as a miracle too. Our dear brother’s trials and tribulations started since birth and continued until adulthood, but Alhamdu Lillah, his trials only increased him in piety and closeness to the All Mighty.

Mohammed Hashiem was diagnosed with Neurofibromatosis, a rare genetic disorder of the nervous system, around the age of 18. This disease mainly affects how nerve cells form and grow. The disease causes tumour/s to grow on the nerves affecting critical sensory organs.

There are three types of neurofibromatosis and Mohammed Hashiem was diagnosed with Type 2. This condition can only be managed symptomatically as there is no current cure in place. As his disease progressed, our beloved brother slowly started losing key motor functions such as his walking, hearing, eyesight, speech and ultimately his entire mobility. Prior to losing his eyesight, speech and mobility, our beloved brother continued to attend classes to revise his memorization and he did not see his impairment as an obstacle between him and his relationship with our Creator or the holy Quraan.

Mohammed Hashiem faced many challenges but despite this, he remained focused, determined and endured the best of patience through every phase of his life. Alhamdu Lillah he managed to complete the memorization of the glorious Quraan and graduated as Hafith from Darul Ubaiy now referred to as the DU centre on the 5th September 2014. During his short and amazing life, Mohammed Hashiem was able to achieve many remarkable accomplishments. From obtaining merit awards academically (three in one year at Islamia) , to completing pilgrimage (Hajj) in 2005 at the youthful age of just 14 years Alhamdu Lillah. Our dear and beloved brother has been an exceptional inspiration to many of his fellow students to complete their hifth. He inspired many with his knowledge and passion for the recitation of the glorious Quraan.

One of the happiest and proudest memories that we have of Mohammed Hashiem was when he graduated as a Hafith student at the age of 22. He was so content with his life at that time as he believed he had fulfilled his life’s purpose. Alhamdu Lillah. A heart-breaking memory that we as a family witnessed was the devastating feeling he experienced upon the loss of his eyesight and speech. It was not the fact that he could no longer see or communicate with any of us but rather the inability to recite the glorious Quraan. The love and respect he had for the Quraan was so pure, as pure as one would expect between the Prophet (SAW) and his companions. He dedicated his life to the Quran and found his peace and confidence in the holy words and through the recitation of the Quraan. Even after losing most of his motor functions, Mohammed Hashiem had immense faith in our creator and remained steadfast in prayer even in a bed ridden state. Although bedridden he was not in a comatose state. He still had thoughts and feelings and was unable to communicate them to us at all. He accepted his condition and Allah’s decree for him without a single complaint.

Subhaan Allah.

Allah says in Surat Al-Baqarah:

لاوُسْعَهَا إِ  نَفْسً اللَّهُ يُكَلِّفُ لَا

“Allah JJ does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear…” (Qur’an, 2:286). Our dear brother, Hafiz Al Haaj Mohammed Hashiem Datay was an exemplary example of this. Subhaan Allah. Indeed, Allah tests those whom he loves and we make dua that our brother bears the fruits of his patience and endurance in the Akhirah Ameen. May Allah unite him with the Quraan and may the Quraan be his ultimate companion in the grave and the hereafter In Shaa Allah Ameen.
